Dracula (Claes Bang)

I fell in love with Francis Ford Coppola adaptation of Dracula since i was a kid. Yes, i watched it when i was in junior high school. The direction, acting (except poor Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker), costume and  production design was marvelous. It will always be in my top movie chart.

I finally read the novel written by Bram Stoker when i was in early 20’s. He was a real genius. Wrote a whole novel from a compilation of fictional diary pages and letters from all of the characters. I can see the Count from so many angle. The big difference between the novel and the Coppola’s adaptation his background and motivation. In the movie adaptation, the Count was a noble warrior who fell abandoned by God and want to take his revenge to God and the world. In the Novel, he’s just a pure Evil. As simple as that. And i love both of those versions.

BBC and Netflix made a new one developed by Mark Gatiss and Steve Moffat starring the unknown Claes Bang as Count Dracula. I can say that this is the most provocative version of Count Dracula and his journey. He is very chatty and silly in this version. In some scenes he look very similar with the late Christopher Lee. lots of twisted characters and plot and the timeline also shocking and made some people hate this version i believe. And.. i also love this version.

As a novel, Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the most simple and lovely literature product. But it also a very good source to be twised in other adaptation and medium. And the latest adaptation was brilliantly successful. At least for me.
