The Joker is one of the most legendary villain in pop culture history and has been interpreted in many ways. I watched Batman TV Series and Batman: The Animated Series when I was a little kid, read many Batman comic books and watch many interpretations of Batman and his Villains on the movies.
The most iconic and memorable interpretation was Heath Ledger version from The Dark Knight. For me, too much plot holes in that movie and I didn’t like Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel (sorry :D) but everything was forgiven because of Heath’s performance. He made a brand new persona from the Joker. For me he’s not a lunatic clown like we saw in any other forms. He is sane man with tragic background who want spread terror and anarchy to the world. Simply a terrorist with war paint. For me, he fits perfectly in Nolan’s Batman universe.
But the world still exist and new DC universe has come. We saw the new generation of DC heroes and we need new interpretation of DC villains. I can see many possibilities in this new universe. It’s grounded, gritty but we can see meta humans are exist (not like in Nolan’s Batman universe) so it can be very comical and infinite. We had the darkest interpretation of Lex Luthor (played by Jessie Eisenberg) in movie history. Dark and witty actually. And he could be more crazy and powerful if the creative people in DC plan the future seriously.
And yes, The Joker is needed too. And Jared Leto (a picky actor) took the role. Too much negative thoughts for this interpretation. Some people are locked with Ledger’s performance and wouldn’t see any more interpretation of the Joker in the rest of their life. But for me, for this new DV universe, Leto’s performance is perfect. He’s not a terrorist. He is the odd ball. He is the legendary lunatic clown. He is Daffy Duck with blink-blink stuff and purple croco leather coat. He will be a perfect match for Ben Affleck’s Batman.
Many things come and go. Life goes on. Let’s have fun and enjoy the new universe. Respect the past, embrace the future.
